How to Apply for Summer Internships in 2026/2027: A Step-by-Step Guide
Updated Oct 1, 2026
Summer internships are the most common route into a full-time graduate job in tech, finance and consulting. The process is competitive but predictable. Here is the plan we recommend for the summer 2027 cycle.
1. Decide what you are applying for
Pick one or two role families (for example software engineering and data science) and two or three locations. A focused search lets you tailor every application instead of sending one generic resume to hundreds of companies.
2. Build a shortlist of 30–60 companies
- Start from the 2027 summer internship list and filter by role and country.
- Mix "reach" employers with mid-size companies and startups, which often hire later and have less competition.
- Track each application in a spreadsheet: company, role, link, date applied, deadline, status.
3. Prepare your resume before applications open
Most programs ask only for a resume at the first stage. Get it ready in advance using our internship resume tips. Keep it to one page and quantify results wherever you can.
4. Apply early
Many employers review applications as they arrive and close once they have enough candidates, even if the official deadline is later. See the internship application timeline for when each industry typically opens.
5. Prepare for online assessments
- Software & data: coding challenges (arrays, strings, hash maps, graphs), sometimes SQL.
- Finance & consulting: numerical and verbal reasoning tests, situational judgement tests and game-based assessments.
- All roles: video interviews where you record answers to behavioural questions.
6. Interviews
Prepare 6–8 stories using the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result) that cover teamwork, leadership, failure and a project you are proud of. For technical roles, practice explaining your thinking out loud. For consulting, practice case interviews with a partner.
7. Follow up and keep going
Keep applying until you have an offer in hand. Set up email alerts so new postings reach you the day they appear.
